RTU Extensionists Tuned towards Cultivation of Culture and Inclusivity through Music in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro

In a meaningful week of music, culture, and community, the Cultural Affairs Units of Rizal Technological University, together with the Institute of Human Kinetics, brought the “DANCE: Cultivating Culture and Inclusivity Through Traditional Filipino Arts – MUSIC” program to Paluan, Occidental Mindoro. As part of RTU’s extension program, this initiative aimed to nurture local talent and promote Filipino cultural identity through choral training with the Ganadong Himig Paluan Chorale Group on June 17-22, 2025.

The training was led by a dedicated team of faculty members: Asst. Prof. Evelyn N. Dagami, Head of the Cultural Affairs Unit, Asst. Prof. Julian B. Santos, Jr., Head of the Cultural Affairs Unit, Instr. Michelle B. Cancio, Department Head of General Physical Education, and Music Director Mr. Renier Aguilar. Supporting the program were passionate student volunteers from RTU Himig Rizalia, Christian Dave Amosin Terrenal, Krisha Elera, and John Joelle Gimeno.

Throughout the six-day program, members of the chorale were immersed in a variety of workshops focused on vocal techniques, harmony, breathing, posture, and performance discipline. Both traditional and contemporary Filipino choral pieces were taught, celebrating the richness of Philippine musical heritage while building a strong sense of unity and expression within the group.

What began as a training soon evolved into a journey of self-discovery, collaboration, and cultural pride. Each day brought visible progress not only in the participants’ technical abilities, but also in their confidence and collective spirit. The program culminated in a heartfelt performance, where the Ganadong Himig Paluan Chorale Group proudly showcased what they had learned.

This extension program served as a powerful reminder of the arts’ ability to connect people, uplift communities, and empower individuals. It was more than a training; it was a celebration of Filipino music, a nurturing of local talent, and a meaningful step toward building inclusive, culturally enriched communities through the universal language of music.
