The Research, Development, and Innovation Office (RDIO) of Rizal Technological University (RTU) conducted a three-day training-workshop for the personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), titled “From Information to Insight: Empowering the AFP with Advanced Research and Data Analytics.” The activity was held from March 9 to 11, 2026, bringing together academic experts and military personnel to strengthen research competencies and promote data-driven decision-making within the defense sector.
The training was designed to enhance the professional research capabilities of AFP personnel by providing comprehensive instruction on scientific research methodologies, systematic data collection strategies, and advanced analytics techniques. The program aimed to help participants transform operational information into meaningful insights through structured research frameworks and data visualization approaches.
Prior to the formal opening of the training, RTU representatives paid a courtesy visit to Lt. Gen. Arvin R. Lagamon, Commander of the Civil Military Operations Command (CMOC-AFP). The visit underscored the shared commitment of the military and academic sectors to strengthen collaboration in advancing research, innovation, and knowledge exchange for national development.
The opening program featured an inspirational message from Assoc. Prof. John Eric O. Estrellado, RDIO Director, who emphasized the importance of harnessing research and analytics in transforming raw operational information into strategic insights that support effective decision-making.
Among the key officials who supported the training was Col. Edgardo V. Talaroc Jr., Commander of the Information Support Group of CMOC AFP, who also spearheaded the coordination of the activity with RTU. The program included lectures and workshops facilitated by RTU experts, including Instr. Joel Mark P. Rodriguez, Chief of the Senator Neptali Gonzales Research Center for Development Studies; Dr. Ryan Manuel D. Guido, Head of the Data Science and Smart Analytics Research Unit; and Instr. Jason B. Kalaw, Head of the RTU Center for Astronomy Research and Development (CARD).
Sessions throughout the workshop covered essential topics such as research fundamentals, survey instrument design, data collection methods, ethical use of data in compliance with Republic Act No. 10173, and data analysis and visualization techniques. Participants also engaged in hands-on activities that allowed them to analyze sample datasets and generate insights applicable to operational contexts.
The training was supported by several facilitators from RTU, including Asst. Prof. Nida V. Alcantara, Deputy Director of RDIO; Ms. Alphagen V. Pajo; Mr. John Tristhan Exequiel Dominguez; and Ms. Margareth C. Custodio, who guided participants during workshop applications and collaborative exercises.
During the closing program, Dr. Magno M. Quendangan, RTU Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services, delivered a special message highlighting the significance of strengthening research culture across institutions. He emphasized that research and analytics play a vital role not only in academic advancement but also in strategic governance and operational effectiveness.
The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to foster collaborative partnerships that promote research excellence, data literacy, and evidence-based practices in support of national development.
