RTU, Mandaluyong LGU, and COMELEC Collab for Voters’ Education and Registration Fair

In a concerted effort to strengthen democratic participation among citizens, the Rizal Technological University’s (RTU) Administrative Services Department, in collaboration with the Mandaluyong Local Government Unit (LGU) and the Mandaluyong Commission on Elections (COMELEC), organized a voters’ education and registration fair. The event, held on March 22, 2024, at the RTU Main Campus, aimed to enlighten and engage individuals on the significance of their voting rights.

Mandaluyong City Mayor Hon. Benjamin S. Abalos Sr. showed his support by gracing the event. The gathering was warmly welcomed by Dr. Ma. Eugenia M. Yangco, the university president, highlighted the important role of the event in shaping the civic consciousness of the youth, particularly first-time voters. Dr. Yangco underscored the essence of democracy, emphasizing the right to vote as a fundamental principle of society.

The keynote speaker, Hon. George Erwin M. Garcia, Chairman of the Commission on Elections, shared his personal anecdotes relevant to the event’s theme, “Karapatang Bumoto, Simulan sa Pagpaparehistro.” Hon. Garcia explained the importance of exercising one’s right to vote, regardless of social status, stressing that inclusivity is indispensable for a thriving democracy. He assured attendees that COMELEC is dedicated to leaving no Filipino behind in the democratic process.

Atty. Joie G. Geronimo, Attorney III of the Education and Information Department, provided a breakdown of the registration and voting process. He navigated through the procedural details, offering insights on voter eligibility and responsibilities. Atty. Geronimo’s comprehensive presentation equipped attendees with the knowledge necessary to navigate the electoral landscape confidently.

The voters’ education and registration fair at Rizal Technological University served as a testament to the collaborative efforts between educational institutions and government agencies in promoting civic participation and strengthening democracy. By equipping citizens, especially the youth, with the tools and understanding needed to engage in the electoral process, the event contributes to the cultivation of an informed and empowered electorate, essential for the advancement of society.
