Rizal Technological University (RTU), through the College of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Accountancy (CBEA)–Accountancy Department, hosted the Rizaldy S. Menor (RSM) National Taxation Quiz Bee–East NCR Local Cup on October 22, 2026, at the RTU Mandaluyong Main Campus.

The event brought together students and faculty advisers from 10 higher education institutions across the National Capital Region (NCR) for an academic competition focused on Philippine taxation. With TaxHelp Philippines, Build Your Way Academy, and RTU-Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) Boni as partner organizations, the activity provided a platform for students to demonstrate their technical knowledge, strengthen their analytical skills, and engage in professional learning beyond the classroom.

The program opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Rome Sherriff G. Montoya, Dean of the College of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Accountancy (CBEA), followed by a taxation symposium led by Michael R. Garcia Jr., CPA, CPMP, President of Build Your Way Academy. Drawing from his experience in accounting, taxation, and consultancy, Mr. Garcia shared insights into the practical applications of taxation in the accountancy profession. His discussion provided participants with a broader understanding of the role of taxation in accounting practice and its relevance to the responsibilities of future accounting professionals.

The symposium also provided an opportunity for students to gain professional insights beyond classroom discussions and strengthen their appreciation of taxation as an essential component of accountancy. An open question-and-answer session further encouraged engagement between the speaker and participants, allowing students to raise questions and gain additional perspectives on the topics discussed.

The competition proceeded with easy, average, and difficult rounds that assessed the participating teams’ knowledge of tax principles, accuracy, and ability to apply taxation concepts under competitive conditions. Following the conclusion of the quiz bee, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila emerged as the champion of the RSM National Taxation Quiz Bee – East NCR Local Cup and will represent the National Capital Region in the upcoming RSM National Taxation Quiz Bee – Luzon Island Cup.

The successful conduct of the event reflects RTU’s continuing efforts to provide students with opportunities to apply classroom learning and engage with peers, professionals, and partner institutions. Through initiatives that bring academic knowledge into a competitive and professional setting, the University supports the development of future accountants equipped with the technical knowledge and analytical skills required in the evolving accountancy profession.
