Fire hazards continue to threaten households and communities, underscoring the need to equip youth with practical skills in fire safety and emergency response. To combat the risks of fire hazards, Rizal Technological University’s (RTU) College of Education (CEd), in coordination with the Extension and Community Services Office, launched an activity-based outreach program titled “Fire Smart: Learning the Proper Use of Fire Extinguishers” on September 24, 2026.

Instr. Ryan V. Munar, Project Leader, in partnership with the Makaturing Homeowners Association, Inc., and supported by students from the Department of BTVTED major in Welding and Fabrication.

The program was conceptualized to address the identified need for youth training on fire safety, as determined through the community needs assessment conducted with the partner organization. It aimed to enhance awareness, develop practical skills in the proper use of fire extinguishers, and promote safe behavior during emergencies. The event opened with the opening remarks of Instr. Ryan V. Munar, who pointed out the value of preparedness and vigilance in preventing fire-related incidents.

The preliminary session began with discussions on fire hazards, fire safety practices, and the different types of fire extinguishers. Participants actively engaged in the learning

Process by sharing insights and asking questions about real-life fire scenarios.

The second session featured a hands-on demonstration of the PASS Method—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep—where participants practiced the proper use of fire extinguishers under guided supervision. The demonstration provided an opportunity for the youth to apply their learning and gain confidence in handling emergency situations.

The activity concluded by highlighting the value of collaboration between RTU and its partner communities in fostering safety awareness and proactive emergency response.

Through Fire Smart, RTU continues to uphold its commitment to community empowerment, practical education, and sustainable partnerships that strengthen resilience and preparedness in times of emergency.
