From Paper to Purpose: RTU’s Green Digital Transformation Begins

Rizal Technological University (RTU) has formally initiated a significant institutional shift in its academic processes through the implementation of Office Order No. 822, series of 2026, establishing the RTU Green Digital Archiving Program (G-DAP), also known as the One Hard Copy Policy for Theses and Dissertations.

This policy introduces a digital-first framework for the submission and archiving of undergraduate and graduate research outputs, requiring only one official hard copy submission. The initiative reflects a strategic move toward modernizing academic systems while aligning institutional practices with principles of sustainability and efficiency.

Guided by the University’s vision, “RTU: A Campus with a Purpose,” the program underscores the integration of digital innovation into academic operations. By reducing reliance on printed materials, the policy contributes to more resource-efficient processes and supports environmentally responsible practices within the academic community.

The program is an initiative by the International Affairs and Linkages Office in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. This partnership facilitates a coordinated approach to enhancing knowledge management systems, ensuring the systematic preservation, accessibility, and dissemination of scholarly work.

The transition to digital archiving is expected to improve access to academic resources by enabling more efficient retrieval and utilization of research outputs. It also supports the long-term preservation of institutional knowledge while maintaining academic standards in research documentation and submission.

Furthermore, the initiative aligns with key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. It contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education by improving access to academic materials; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure by strengthening digital systems for research; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: through reduced paper usage; and SDG 13: Climate Action by minimizing resource consumption associated with traditional archiving practices.

Through the Green Digital Archiving Program, RTU advances its commitment to academic excellence, institutional efficiency, and sustainable development by embedding digital solutions into its core academic functions.
