Rizal Technological University (RTU) took a significant step towards advancing research and innovation as two of its key leaders participated in the recently concluded Research and Innovation Competitiveness Summit. Dr. Magno M. Quendangan, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (VPRIES), and Assoc.Prof. Jason A. Romero, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (VCRIES) for RTU’s Pasig branch, represented the university at the summit held from June 25 to 27 at Mahogany A, Sequoia Hotel Manila Bay, Aseana Business Park, Parañaque City.
Organized by the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC), the summit focused on identifying obstacles to innovation, determining regional niche research areas, prioritizing industry focuses for national strategy, and developing actionable policy recommendations for the National Innovation Council (NIC). These goals align with PASUC’s Platform for Innovating SUCs for Industry 4.0 (PISI), a program designed to empower Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and enhance their contributions to scientific and technological innovation, economic competitiveness, and inclusive growth in the knowledge economy.
The summit featured a series of interactive discussions, workshops, and collaborative sessions involving SUC Vice Presidents for Research and Extension, SUC Vice Chancellors for Research and Extension, Directors for Research, and Research Heads. These activities aimed to improve Philippine research and innovation’s competitive edge, strengthen SUCs’ research capacities, align research initiatives with regional and national priorities, and contribute to the Philippines’ socio-economic development through innovation and research excellence.
The insights and collaborations forged during the event are expected to significantly bolster RTU’s research initiatives and contribute to the broader goals of the Philippine research community. The Research and Innovation Competitiveness Summit marks a significant step towards strengthening the research capacities of SUCs and aligning them with the nation’s strategic priorities. By fostering a collaborative environment and addressing key challenges, the summit aims to drive forward the Philippines’ socio-economic development through innovation and excellence in research.
