RTU Hosts TUPAD Culminating Activity: A Celebration of Gender Awareness and Inclusivity

July 4, 2024—Rizal Technological University (RTU) Main Campus, Blue room R&D Building. The RTU’s Extension and Community Services Office (ECSO), Program and Events Management Office (PEMO), and Gender Studies and Development Office (GSDO), Building Facilities Management Unit (BFMU), in partnership with the City of Mandaluyong LGU and the Office of the Representative of the Lone District of Mandaluyong City, hosted the TUlong PAngkabuhayan sa ating Disadvantage/Displaced Workers  (TUPAD) Culminating Activity.

The event themed, “Fostering Inclusivity: A Seminar on Gender Awareness and Sensitivity”, was designed to enhance understanding and promote inclusivity, drawing a diverse audience eager to engage with these critical topics.

The event commenced with welcome remarks from Dr. Helen Mercedes C. Asturias, head of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit of GSDO. Her address set an engaging tone for the day’s discussions, emphasizing the seminar’s objectives. Following this, Instr. Ricardo H. Momongan, Jr., Director of ECSO, delivered an inspirational message highlighting the importance of gender awareness and sensitivity. His words underscored the need for ongoing education and advocacy to create an inclusive society.

Instr. Xides Leonore P. Conwi from GSDO provided enlightening insights into Gender and Development (GAD) concepts. Her interactive session encouraged participants to share their perspectives, fostering a collaborative learning environment. This session was immediately followed by a presentation about gender-fair language and its impact on perceptions and biases from Instr. Christian Paul L. Mendoza of GSDO.  An open forum immediately followed the presentations, providing a platform for participants to engage in a dynamic exchange of ideas. Attendees asked thought-provoking questions and shared their thoughts on the topics discussed, highlighting the diverse viewpoints present.

A notable highlight of the event was the sharing of stories by TUPAD workers. These personal narratives focused on the tangible impact of inclusive policies, illustrating the real-world benefits of fostering a gender-inclusive environment. The workers’ stories of resilience and empowerment resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the seminar’s themes.

As the event drew to a close, certificates were awarded to the speakers and participants in recognition of their contributions and engagement. Instr. Joan E. Pagilagan, Director of PEMO, delivered closing remarks that reiterated the importance of continuous efforts towards gender inclusivity.
