To strengthen educators’ competencies in emerging technologies and promote innovation in science and engineering education, faculty members of the College of Engineering at Rizal Technological University (RTU) conducted the Hands-on Arduino Workshop for Educators: Internet of Things (IoT) for the Science Department faculty of Rizal High School.
The extension program was led by Jayros V. Amar, with Odilon B. Yangco, Jenny M. Aruta, Wilfredo L. Timajo, and Roy I. Gomez serving as members of the training team. The workshop provided participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the fundamentals of the Internet of Things (IoT), one of today’s most transformative technologies in education and industry.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to Arduino-based microcontrollers and embedded systems used in developing IoT applications. Through hands-on activities, the educators learned how sensors, actuators, and communication technologies, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, work together to collect, transmit, and process real-time data. The training also demonstrated how these technologies can be applied to create smart devices and automated systems for educational and real-world applications.
The facilitators highlighted the growing role of IoT in Electronics Engineering education, emphasizing its use in smart laboratories, remote monitoring systems, environmental sensing, and classroom automation. Discussions also explored how IoT supports project-based learning by enabling students to design and develop innovative solutions using embedded systems, cloud-based platforms, and wireless communication technologies.
Beyond technical applications, the workshop underscored the importance of the responsible and secure implementation of IoT systems. Participants gained insights into key considerations such as cybersecurity, data privacy, network reliability, and the proper maintenance of connected devices to ensure safe and effective technology integration in educational institutions.
The activity also encouraged educators to integrate IoT concepts into classroom instruction and student research projects, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among learners. By exposing teachers to current engineering technologies, the workshop aimed to strengthen STEM education and prepare students for future careers in automation, embedded systems, telecommunications, and Industry 4.0.
Through this initiative, the College of Engineering reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement and academic extension by sharing its expertise with partner schools and empowering educators with relevant technological skills. The collaboration with the Science Department of Rizal High School reflects a shared commitment to advancing quality science and engineering education and preparing the next generation of innovative and globally competitive learners.
