RTU Empowers Changemakers at Student Leaders Sustainability Congress 2026

Rizal Technological University (RTU) ignited a powerful movement for sustainability as student leaders gathered for the Student Leaders Sustainability Congress 2026, held on April 30 at RTU Mandaluyong Campus. Organized by the International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO), in partnership with the Office of the Student and Alumni Affairs Services (OSAAS) and the Supreme Student Council (RTU-SSC), the congress served as a dynamic platform for youth leadership, collaboration, and action toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event brought together student leaders from across colleges, united by a shared commitment to drive meaningful change within and beyond the campus. With sustainability at the core of the discussions, the congress highlighted the critical role of the youth in shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and globally responsive future.

A key highlight of the program was the inspiring talk of Mr. Jerome Duque from Tarlac Agricultural University, titled “Sustainability Leadership: Empowering Students for SDG Action.” His presentation provided a comprehensive and compelling overview of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing how student leaders can translate global frameworks into concrete, localized initiatives. He challenged participants to move beyond awareness and become proactive agents of transformation.

Equally impactful was Mr. Christian Tarroza’s session from the National Aviation Academy of the Philippines, who delivered an engaging discussion on “Student Leaders in Action.” His talk underscored the importance of initiative, collaboration, and accountability in student governance, encouraging leaders to turn vision into measurable impact.

The congress was strongly supported by Dr. Rodrigo D. P. Tomas, Dean of OSAAS, who delivered a powerful call to action, urging students to embrace sustainability not just as an advocacy, but as a responsibility. Reinforcing this commitment, SSC President Ms. Zildjian Faith Salazar expressed strong support for student-driven sustainability initiatives and emphasized the importance of unified action across all student bodies.

One of the most engaging segments of the event was the Panel Discussion on the Roles of Student Leaders in Campus Sustainability, moderated by IALO Director Assoc. Prof. Donato Z. Estocada. The panel featured prominent student leaders: Mr. Glenn Nazrel Leuterio Valdezco, MSSC President; Ms. Juliana Marie Tubio, CBEASC President; Mr. Dustin Alexander C. Bacolor, CEDSC President; Mr. Gene Martin So, IHKSC President; Ms. Cherry Mae S. Garperio, CASC President; Ms. Bonamae G. Felisimo, ICSC President; and Mr. Aeolus Gabriel S. Cabog, IASC President.

During the discussion, each college council showcased its respective SDG-driven initiatives, demonstrating innovation, commitment, and impact at the grassroots level. The platform not only highlighted ongoing projects but also opened opportunities for collaboration with IALO, signaling a stronger, more integrated approach to sustainability across the university.

Student leaders were actively engaged throughout the congress, reflecting a deep sense of ownership and enthusiasm in advancing sustainability efforts. The energy in the room underscored a collective realization: meaningful change begins with empowered, informed leadership.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Mariel Dela Trinidad, Head of the Student and Alumni Affairs Services Unit, who commended the participants for their passion and encouraged them to sustain the momentum beyond the congress.

The Student Leaders Sustainability Congress 2026 stands as a testament to RTU’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible leaders. More than an event, it was a call to action that empowers the next generation to lead with purpose, collaborate for impact, and champion sustainability as a shared mission for the future.
