RTU, SARF de Laguna Explores Collaborative Community Projects, Conducts Ocular at SSCR-Canlubang

On April 23, 2026, Rizal Technological University (RTU) conducted an ocular visit to the Secular Augustinian Recollect Fraternity (SARF) de Laguna at San Sebastian College Recoletos de Laguna, Canlubang, Laguna. The visit was to explore and assess the feasibility of establishing collaborative community projects in mushroom cultivation and urban agriculture. These initiatives are recognized as sustainable livelihood programs that promote food security, generate income, and encourage environmental stewardship.

Experts from RTU inspected the identified land areas of SARF de Laguna, assessing physical, environmental, and logistical suitability for mushroom cultivation and urban agriculture. They also examined available resources, such as soil type, space, manpower, and local support systems, that may be used for the proposed projects.

Previous discussions with SARF stakeholders assessed the community’s readiness and interest in participating in sustainable livelihood and agricultural development programs. The activity facilitated initial knowledge exchange between RTU experts and SARF representatives, focusing on best practices in mushroom production and urban farming techniques.

The RTU team included experts from the Urban Agriculture Research and Development Unit (UARDU) and the Mushroom and Biotech Research and Development Unit (MBRDU), including Assoc. Prof. Jovita A. Anit, UARDU Head; Mr. Norberto A. Bautista, UARDU staff; and Asst. Prof. Patrocinio O. Macalinao, Jr., MBRDU Head, and mushroom and biotechnology experts, Mr. Francis Glenn Peterson, Instr. Harvey C. Almadin, and Instr. Kriznald John O. Azucena, and were assisted by Asst. Prof. Ricardo H. Momongan, Jr., Director of RTU-Extension and Community Services Office, and Dr. Robelyn B. Bautista, Head of ECLU-ECSO.

UARDU leads the research, innovation, and program development in urban farming systems, maximizing available spaces and resources to ensure food sustainability in both rural and urban settings. On the other hand, MBRDU develops technologies and methodologies for mushroom cultivation and biotechnology applications, providing communities with alternative sources of livelihood and nutrition while promoting environmentally sound practices. These two units are RTU’s arms in sustainable agriculture in urban settings and mushroom farming.

SARF de Laguna was represented by Fr. Antonio C. Zabala, Jr. from the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR), together with Mrs. Emily De Vela, Mr. Junie Rodriguez, Mrs. Melissa Duque Rodriguez, and other involved personnel. The Order of Augustinian Recollects is a Roman Catholic religious congregation dedicated to simplicity, service, and community engagement. At the same time, SARF serves as its lay counterpart, committed to supporting community-based initiatives and spiritual development.

The ophthalmic visit provided baseline information that will serve as a reference for developing an agreement and a subsequent project implementation plan. By combining the expertise of UARDU and MBRDU with the commitment of SARF stakeholders, RTU and SARF de Laguna reaffirmed their dedication to advancing sustainable agricultural development. This initiative strengthens institutional partnerships and represents a significant step toward promoting community-based programs aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
