Rizal Technological University marked a significant milestone in its internationalization efforts with the successful conduct of the lecture “Digital Currencies: Technology Adoption vs. Policy Implications” delivered by Dr. Vikas Kumar, who formally joined RTU as its first Visiting Professor from India. The academic event, spearheaded by the International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO) in partnership with the College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy (CBEA), was a development that signals the university’s expanding global academic network and strengthened international collaboration.
In his presentation, Dr. Kumar explored the accelerating adoption of digital currencies worldwide, examining both technological advancements and the policy challenges that accompany them. He discussed the fundamentals of blockchain technology, the rise of cryptocurrencies, and the growing interest in central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), emphasizing how these innovations are reshaping global financial systems.
Dr. Kumar highlighted that while digital currencies offer promising opportunities, such as financial inclusion, faster cross-border transactions, and fintech innovation, they also present regulatory complexities. Issues surrounding consumer protection, cybersecurity, anti-money laundering compliance, and financial stability remain key concerns for governments and policymakers. “The pace of technological innovation often exceeds the speed of regulatory adaptation,” Dr. Kumar noted, underscoring the need for balanced and adaptive policy frameworks that both encourage innovation and safeguard the public interest.
The lecture drew active participation from students, faculty members, and administrators, particularly from business and entrepreneurship programs. The open forum facilitated discussions on the Philippine digital finance landscape and the broader implications of digital currencies in emerging economies.
University officials described the event as a landmark initiative that not only addresses relevant global financial trends but also strengthens RTU’s academic partnerships beyond national borders. The engagement of Dr. Kumar as the institution’s first Visiting Professor from India reflects RTU’s continuing commitment to global academic exchange, research collaboration, and transformative education.
Assoc. Prof. Donato Z. Estocada, IALO Director, emphasized the significance of the event, stating: “Today, we are not just hosting a seminar; RTU is making a statement that RTU is ready to engage globally.” His message highlighted RTU’s growing confidence and readiness to participate in international academic discourse and collaboration.
The event concluded with renewed calls for expanded discussions, research, and collaboration in digital finance—positioning RTU at the forefront of discussions on technology-driven economic transformation and sustainable global development.
