Led by the University President, Dr. Ma. Eugenia M. Yangco, Rizal Technological University met with the United Architects of the Philippines-Philippine Bamboo Project Special Committee (UAP-PBPSC) for an exploratory meeting on possible collaboration on sustainable development centered on the use of bamboo.
The meeting discussed potential areas of collaboration including sustainable materials, green innovation, research and development, community-based programs, and academic–industry–local government partnerships. Discussions highlighted the strategic role of bamboo as a sustainable resource that supports environmental stewardship, livelihood generation, and inclusive urban development.
Present in the meeting were key figures in RTU, including Asst. Prof. Ricardo H. Momongan, Jr., Director of the Extension and Community Services Office (ECSO); Ar. Marirose V. Vocal, Director of the Institute of Architecture (IA); Ar. Felipe Magcamit, IA Faculty; and Biology Department Faculty Members, Instr. Harvey Almadin and Instr. Kriznald John Azucena. The UAP-PBPSC was represented by its Vice Chairperson Maria Carmen S. Yatco, and Committee Member Gina Guasch. Mr. Jesus “Jesse” C. Cruz, Former Mandaluyong City Councilor was also present in support of the initiative.
RTU representatives emphasized the University’s commitment to applied research, extension services, and interdisciplinary engagement aligned with national sustainability goals and local development priorities. The UAP-PBPSC shared insights on existing and proposed bamboo programs, underscoring opportunities for capacity building, technology transfer, and policy support. Mr. Cruz expressed strong support for initiatives that strengthen collaboration among the academe, professional organizations, and local government in advancing sustainable and community-responsive projects in Mandaluyong City.
The exploratory meeting concluded with a shared understanding to continue coordination, further define priority project areas, and identify concrete next steps toward formal collaboration.
