As part of its continuing efforts to explore initiatives that support student welfare, food security, and community outreach, the Rizal Technological University (RTU) Food Services Unit (FSU) conducted a benchmarking visit and learning exchange with the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman to gather information and practical insights for its ongoing research on the possible development of a Soup Kitchen or Food Assistance Program in the future.
The RTU delegation was led by Dr. Rhodora D. Lintot, Head of the Food Services Unit, together with Instr. Marvin A. Fuentes, Deputy Director of the Resource Generation and Auxiliary Services Office (RGASO); Instr. April Joy Andes, RGASO Staff; and Ms. Vaneza Mae P. Casi and Ms. Sean Ellaine L. Borja, FSU Staff.
The UP Diliman delegation was led by Prof. Jose Carlo G. de Pano, together with Ms. Irish Nicole E. Espinar and Mr. Tristan Floyd Q. Rafa of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA), and representatives from the UP University Food Services (UFS), namely Prof. April J. Perez, Director; Ms. Donna Ann S. Anselmo; Ms. Melissa G. Victoria; and Ms. Aileen L. Gerona.
The learning exchange focused on key areas that may be considered in the future development of a food assistance program, including beneficiary identification and selection, program planning and organization, food preparation and safety, procurement and resource management, sponsorship and partnership development, funding and financial management, volunteer and staff management, community engagement, and monitoring and documentation.
Discussions also covered program sustainability, potential expansion, and challenges that may be encountered during implementation. These provided RTU with practical information and considerations to support its continuing research and assessment of the feasibility of establishing a similar initiative in the future.
The benchmarking activity served as a valuable research and learning opportunity for RTU, providing the University with a better understanding of the operational, financial, organizational, and sustainability considerations involved in a Soup Kitchen or Food Assistance Program.
Through benchmarking and knowledge sharing with other higher education institutions, RTU continues to explore and study initiatives that may contribute to student welfare, food security, and the well-being of the Rizaliano community.
