Rizaliano Guidance Advocates Fortify Skills in Psychological First Aid Training

Rizal Technological University (RTU) Counseling and Assessment Services Unit (CASU) successfully conducted a three-day Professional Development Training on Psychological First Aid (PFA) for its dedicated Guidance Advocates from November 27-29, 2025. Held at the Upgrade Beach Resort in Infanta, Quezon, the intensive program aimed to significantly fortify the advocates’ capability to administer crucial PFA, the initial compassionate support given to individuals after a distressing event, during times of crisis and emergencies.

The training commenced with a warm message of support from CASU Director, Ms. Emmanuelle Santiago, who encouraged the advocates to engage in the valuable learning experience fully. The first session began with a pre-test to gauge the participants’ baseline knowledge before diving into the core material. The resource speaker, Dr. Marivic Sanchez, then delivered a comprehensive and insightful discussion, meticulously differentiating trauma, stress, and crisis in the context of various traumatic events. Following the lecture, participants immediately engaged in a hands-on PFA Triage Drill. Working in collaborative groups, they applied their new knowledge to expected scenarios using provided worksheets. This essential exercise required them to categorize the priority level for intervention based on the Essential Elements of PFA, fostering shared learning and reinforcing their theoretical understanding with critical practical application.

The second day built upon this solid foundation, delving into more advanced PFA models, including the RAPID model and LPC Models. The session provided an extensive, detailed exploration of these structured frameworks, equipping advocates with multifaceted approaches for effective crisis response. Crucially, the day concluded on a note of vital self-care, as Instructor Mark Anthony Manalo led a mindful therapy session focused on self-compassion. This practice was rightly highlighted as an essential requirement for any psychological first-aider, ensuring the personal well-being and sustainability of those who dedicate themselves to supporting others in distress.

Through initiatives like the Professional Development Training on Psychological First Aid, RTU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to nurturing resilient, compassionate, and well-equipped Guidance Advocates, empowering them to provide critical support in times of crisis while safeguarding their own well-being
