Embracing the Rainbow: Pandayang Rizalia Strengthens Community’s Gender Responsiveness Through Gender Sensitivity Training

In the spirit of its Core Value of Inclusivity, Rizal Technological University (RTU) conducted Gender Sensitivity Training for its GAD Focal Point System-Technical Working Group (GFPS-TWG), Committee on Decorum and Investigation (CODI) members, and newly hired employees.

In partnership with Pathways Center for Lifelong Learning, Inc., the Gender Studies and Development Office (GSDO), under the directorship of Instr. Shereen Cadileña spearheaded the initiative, which featured the expert knowledge of Dr. Gina A. Opiniano, a National GAD Resource Pool Member from the Philippine Commission on Women, and the theme “Promoting Gender Awareness for Employee Wellness”.

Held through teleconferencing on September 24 & 25, 2025, the training discussed various topics related to gender sensitivity, such as the current trends of GAD in the country, RTU’s ongoing efforts towards true inclusivity, the Five Levels of Gender Responsiveness, and even gender-affirming surgeries. Dr.Opiniano’s discussions generally revolved around the concepts of SOGIESC, masterfully expanding Rizalianos’ knowledge on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sexual Characteristics.

The training also delved into real-life stories of real Filipino people. Dr. Opiniano navigated the discussions with concrete anecdotal examples that showed the realities lived by people from different SOGIESC. This effective discussion strategy allowed the participants to understand the plight of all genders.

She also explained the importance of removing the gender insensitivity inculcated in our culture, giving examples of how sexism and gender discrimination have been prevalent even at an institutional level. Furthermore, she presented the current laws that are crucial in gender equality, underscoring RA11313, the Safe Spaces Act, and its landmark effects in the campaign against gender-based harassment.

Rizaliano participants were also given the opportunity to learn how language shapes responsiveness to gender as Dr. Opiniano shares gender-fair language that may be used to avoid misgendering. This equips the participants with knowledge on how to discern sexist language from words that affirm one’s gender, exemplifying Pandayang Rizalia’s enduring commitment to creating a safe space and gender-sensitive environment for Rizalianos.

In a world where gender is fluid, RTU remains welcoming of every Rizaliano, whoever they may choose to be.
