Rizal Technological University (RTU), through the efforts and leadership of its Health and Wellness Committee, has brought back its Health & Wellness Talk Series featuring Dr. Ricco L. Santos, who shared his expert knowledge on how to boost the community’s health through responsible dietary habits and practices to maintain low levels of insulin. The initiative, held on October 9 through a virtual setup, gathered the faculty members and administrative personnel of the university for a valuable exchange of insights towards a more health-conscious lifestyle.
Continuing the RTU: Healthier U Fitness Journey, a health and wellness program designed to foster healthier and more responsible dietary habits among the university community, this session marks the third episode of the Health & Wellness Talk Series. In this session, Dr. Santos focuses on proper human nutrition, food timing, and how to manage insulin levels.
Dr. Santos’ discussion highlighted the Hormonal Obesity Theory, which suggests that insulin is the primary driver of obesity. According to the theory, as Dr. Santos shared, a high-sugar diet and food full of refined carbohydrates can spike insulin levels and contribute to weight gain. This unhealthy dietary lifestyle can foster fat accumulation and even cause metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
However, Dr. Santos clarifies that diabetes is a reversible disease. He underscored that “the cure is real food”. According to the doctor, improvements in dietary habits focused on eating organic and non-processed food can create positive effects on the hormone and overall health of a person. He substantiated his advice with scientific and medical studies, outlining the positive results of integrating a low-carb diet for Type-2 Diabetes patients.
As RTU intensifies its commitment to enhancing its institutional support for the well-being of its teaching and non-teaching workforce, the Health and Wellness Talk Series serves as a pivotal program towards a healthier Rizaliano community anchored on scientific and medically tested knowledge.
