Joining in on the festive season, those eager to renew and transform themselves did not forget to celebrate their progress and the closing of 2025. The Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Mandaluyong City Jail, who are also beneficiaries of Rizal Technological University’s (RTU) Change Behind Bars program, had their Year-End Celebration on December 17, 2025, together with the Extension and Community Services Office (ECSO) and the faculty extensionists.
The program, themed “Celebrating the Year-End Through Hope and Learning”, was a culminating activity that combined festive celebration with academic reflection. More than just a holiday gathering, it was a moment of affirmation and an opportunity to highlight the transformative role of education in rehabilitation, reminding learners that their journey of change is recognized and valued.
The celebration was kicked off with the inspiring opening remarks of J/CINSP David M. Jambalos, Jail Warden of BJMP Mandaluyong City Jail Male Dormitory, who emphasized the importance of education and community support in fostering hope and dignity among PDLs. His message set the tone for the day, reminding everyone that learning and transformation are possible even in the most challenging circumstances.
The first part of the program focused on the academic dimension of the celebration. Dr. Rodrigo D.P. Tomas, Faculty-in-Charge for the subject Understanding the Self, discussed the rationale of the course and its integration into the culminating activity. The CBB learners then presented their final performance outputs, which demonstrated their reflections and growth across the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of the self. These presentations were not only academic exercises but also heartfelt expressions of resilience, identity, and personal transformation.
The second part of the program brought energy and camaraderie through games and interactive activities led by the masters of games. Learners actively participated, fostering unity and shared joy within the community. The awarding of winners and distribution of gifts followed, bringing smiles and warmth to the participants. These moments of laughter and celebration reminded everyone that joy and dignity remain possible even in difficult circumstances.
The program concluded with heartfelt closing remarks delivered by Dr. Kristine Y. Opulencia, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Chairperson of RTU Change Behind Bars. She highlighted the importance of resilience, hope, and education in the journey of transformation, encouraging learners to remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge as a pathway toward reintegration and meaningful contribution to society. Her words resonated deeply, leaving a lasting impression on both learners and organizers.
This year-end celebration was more than a festive gathering. It was a testament to the power of education and community support in fostering dignity, hope, and transformation. Through performances, interactive activities, and gift-giving, the event reminded learners that they are valued, that their journey of change is recognized, and that education can illuminate even the darkest paths. It embodied the vision of RTU Change Behind Bars, affirming that every learner has the potential to grow, transform, and contribute meaningfully to society.
