Extensionists from Rizal Technological University (RTU) conducted the RTU STRIVES (Skills Training and Recognition through Industry-aligned Vocational Education and Standards): Welding Skills Training and TESDA Certification Preparation Program, led by Instr. Ryan V. Munar, Engr. Gerry Cabrera, Engr. Reynell V. Sanchez, Asst. Prof. Marvin A. Apus, Engr. Matthew Jeffrey Roque, and Mr. Vengie, on October 2–9, 2026, at the training facility of Mindoro Marine Manufacturing Corporation (MMMC) in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro.
The program focused on preparing 29 participants from MMMC and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Paluan for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II qualification through technical discussions and practical welding exercises. The sessions covered essential welding concepts, procedures, safety practices, proper equipment handling, and other competencies required in Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
The training also included practical demonstrations, guided exercises, and supervised welding activities at the MMMC facility. These activities allowed participants to apply the techniques discussed during the sessions and develop their practical skills in preparation for the SMAW NC II assessment.
Through the program, the extensionists provided technical-vocational training responsive to the needs of their industry and community partners. The initiative also highlighted the importance of collaboration among higher education institutions, industry partners, and local government units in expanding access to skills development opportunities.
RTU STRIVES forms part of the university’s continuing extension efforts to deliver relevant training that supports workforce development and helps participants prepare for industry-recognized qualifications. The program also strengthened the partnership among RTU, MMMC, and Paluan LGU in advancing practical learning opportunities in the welding and manufacturing sectors.
The initiative reflects RTU’s commitment to its extension advocacy, “Mula sa Komunidad, Para sa Komunidad,” through skills training that responds to the needs of partner communities and industries.
