The Guardian Publication Shines at the 25th Word Cup Philippines – 9th Journalism Masterclass in Boracay

The Guardian Publication made waves at the 25th Word Cup Philippines – 9th Journalism Masterclass held from June 12 to 14 in Boracay, bringing home multiple awards and recognitions. Led by their dedicated adviser, Mr. Paolo Gaspar, the team of campus journalists proudly represented the university in one of the country’s most prestigious campus journalism gatherings.

The annual event, which drew participation from student publications across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, continues to serve as a vibrant platform for young journalists to hone their craft. Since its inception in 1994, Word Cup Philippines has promoted responsible journalism and nurtured future media practitioners.

This year’s masterclass featured talks and workshops from respected industry leaders, including Julius Segovia, Jerome Bonto, Jennifer Lee Bonto, Manolo “Bong” Pedralvez, Johannes Chua, and Eugenio “Sonny” Calapit. The sessions tackled essential topics in news writing, photojournalism, media ethics, and current issues affecting various sectors of society.

 

Following the enriching lectures and training sessions, delegates faced off in competitions designed to challenge their skills and journalistic instincts. The Guardian Publication rose to the occasion, earning accolades across several categories:

  •         Sachi Juliana Santos – 1st Place, Pagsulat ng Lathalain
  •         Ron Aries Grajo – 2nd Place, Pagsulat ng Lathalain and 3rd Place, Pagsulat ng Balitang Agham
  •         Patricia Mae David – 2nd Place, Sports Writing
  •         Joschka Yzel Ilarde – 3rd Place, Pagsulat ng Balitang Agham
  •         John David Teodosio – 3rd Place, Larawang Pampahayagan
  •         Jelliann Pones – 3rd Place, Photojournalism
  •         Althea Lopez – Special Citation, Pagsulat ng Balitang Isports

Their adviser, Mr. Paolo Gaspar, was given the Bronze Ambassador Award, a recognition of his unwavering support and guidance to his student journalists. In addition, Rizal Technological University, home to The Guardian Publication, received an Award of Recognition as Institutional Ambassador.

The team’s success is a testament to their hard work, creativity, and dedication to the journalistic craft. Their performance at the event not only highlighted individual talents but also reflected the strong culture of journalism fostered within their publication.
