January 12, 2024, Pasig City – In a landmark event, the Pasig City Government, Rizal Technological University (RTU), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the utilization of a “Solar-Powered Automated Mushroom Modular Growing House.” The signing and inauguration ceremony took place at Rainforest Park, Barangay Maybunga, Pasig City.
The event began with the initiation of the RTU Grand Alumni Association, with Mr. Patrick C. Plandiano providing the opening remarks. This set the stage for messages of solidarity from key leaders such as RTU President Dr. Ma. Eugenia M. Yangco, DOST-NCR Regional Director Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles, and Hon. Paul Roman C. Santiago.
The ceremony was interspersed with a lively performance by the Pasig City Dance Sports team, followed by inspirational messages from key officials, including Hon. Roman T. Romulo, Representative of Pasig’s Lone District; Vice Mayor Hon. Robert “Dodot” B. Jaworski Jr. and Mayor Hon. Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” N. Sotto of Pasig City.
The event reached its apex with the MOA signing between RTU, DOST, and the Pasig City Local Government Unit, solidifying their joint commitment to this pioneering urban agriculture initiative. The design and development of the modular house were a collaborative effort by the RTU Infrastructure Office and the College of Engineering, showcasing their expertise and commitment to sustainable technology.
Essential officials and guests, including Dr. Glicerio Maningas, President of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig, witnessed the ceremony’s conclusion with the unveiling of the marker for the new facility.
The Urban Farmers of Bonifacio Global City have shown keen interest in the project, expressing enthusiasm for the vegan bagoong product’ that uses mushrooms from urban farming technology. Furthermore, Dr. Yangco expressed her enthusiasm for the technology’s potential in mushroom cultivation and its implications for broader commercialization and innovation.
This collaboration between Pasig City, RTU, and DOST signifies a major step towards sustainable urban farming, underscoring their shared dedication to innovation and environmental conservation.
