Pandayang Rizaliano Debate Team Crowned Champions of the 2nd AUAP English Debate Competition

The 2nd English Debate Competition, organized by the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP), in partnership with the Master’s Institute Development Academy and Seminary (MIDAS), brought together student delegates from universities across the Philippines and other parts of Asia on April 8–9, 2025.

Rizal Technological University hosted this two-day event through the International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO), led by Director Instr. Donato Z. Estocada and his team, alongside AUAP Executive Secretary Ms. Supaporn Chuangchid.

The program officially opened with warm welcoming remarks from AUAP Secretary-General Dr. Arup Swaroop, who emphasized the importance of critical thinking and clear communication in today’s fast-paced world. He encouraged participants to actively engage in the debates, highlighting how such experiences promote academic excellence, personal growth, and self-confidence. His message set a positive tone for the competition, underscoring the value of diverse perspectives and respectful discourse.

University President Dr. Ma. Eugenia M. Yangco followed with her opening remarks, stressing the significance of debate as a tool for sharpening critical thinking, enhancing creativity, and developing effective communication skills. She urged participants to make the most of the opportunity to share their ideas while engaging in a spirited yet respectful exchange of views with fellow debaters.

A panel of distinguished judges ensured the integrity and excellence of the competition. Among them were Dr. Arup Swaroop, Secretary-General of AUAP; Dr. Yhing Sawheny, Deputy Director of International Affairs of Siam University; Dr. Rolando C. Garcia, Treasurer of AUAP; Atty. Rodolfo R. Nicolas, Jr., Professor at World Citi Colleges; Dr. Dick O. Eugenio; Ms. Bella Maria Fall, Miss Mandaluyong 2025; Dr. Ricardo P. Pama, Secretary-General of AUAP; and Dr. Glen R. Mangali, Director at Marikina Polytechnic College. Their expertise and insight helped assess the participants’ arguments, rebuttals, and impromptu speeches with credibility and fairness.

The competition grew more intense as the rounds progressed, eventually narrowing down to the final teams. Rising above the rest was the RTU Debate Team, composed of Mr. Earl Jan B. Mogol, Mr. Roy II Montales, and Mr. Mark Christian Miñon. They were guided by their coach, Mr. John Peter De Leon, who was also awarded Best Coach. Mr. Roy II Montales received the Best Male Debater award, further highlighting RTU’s outstanding performance. Visayas State University claimed the 1st Runner-Up position, while Daffodil International University from Bangladesh placed as 2nd Runner-Up.

This victory marks a proud and memorable moment for RTU. After their intense preparation and dedication, the Pandayang Rizaliano Debate Team demonstrated not only their intellect and composure under pressure but also their embodiment of RTU’s core values: Integrity, Excellence, Nationalism, Inclusivity, and Innovation.
