Rizal Technological University (RTU) has formally joined other leading higher education and research institutions as one of the founding members of the Metro Manila Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research, Development and Extension Consortium (MetroMAARRDEC) during the 1st Regional Research, Development, and Extension Coordinating Committee (RRDCC) Meeting held on October 27, 2025, at the DOST-PCAARRD Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.
The meeting was hosted by the Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) in collaboration with the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). Messages of support were delivered by Dr. Reynaldo B. Ebora, Executive Director of DOST-PCAARRD, and Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles, Regional Director of DOST-NCR.
Key agenda items included the presentation of the rationale behind the creation of MetroMAARRDEC, the election of RRDCC officials, and the formulation of the consortium’s vision, mission, and logo, as well as the identification of thematic areas and the development of the consortium roadmap. The event culminated with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the ratification of the Constitution and By-laws, formally establishing MetroMAARRDEC as a unified network for collaborative research, development, and extension in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sectors within Metro Manila.
RTU was represented by Asst. Prof. John Eric O. Estrellado, Director for Research, Development, and Innovation Office (RDIO), and Asst. Prof. Jovita A. Anit, Unit Head of the Urban Agriculture Research and Development Unit (UARDU). Through this partnership, RTU will play an active role in contributing research expertise, facilitating technology transfer, and supporting community-based programs that align with national development goals.
The establishment of MetroMAARRDEC demonstrates the collective commitment of DOST, PCAARRD, and its member institutions to strengthen regional collaboration and promote research excellence in the AANR sectors, fostering innovation and sustainability in the country’s capital region.
