Faculty and student extensionists from Rizal Technological University’s (RTU) Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTED) Department, led by Instr. Mariacil Agustin-Villanueva implemented their “E-WISE Community Program: Electronics Waste Reduction, Repair, and Sustainable Usage Training” extension program, which trains the youth of Brgy. Daang Bakal in responsible disposal and management of electronic waste.
The program, conducted on March 29, 2026, was supported by the Sangguniang Kabataan of Brgy. Daang Bakal and select students from the BTVTED major in Electronics Technology.
This initiative was designed to address the increasing volume of electronic waste, which continues to pose serious environmental, health, and safety risks in urban communities. Improper disposal, unsafe repair practices, and lack of awareness often lead to pollution, unnecessary waste generation, and missed livelihood opportunities.
Many community members prematurely discard electronic devices due to minor defects, a lack of repair knowledge, or limited access to recycling facilities. Community consultations and needs assessments confirmed the demand for practical repair skills, safe handling of e-waste, and sustainable usage practices.
In response, the program provided hands-on training, awareness sessions, and skills-development activities to empower participants with technical knowledge, promote environmental protection, and encourage responsible and sustainable use of electronic devices, while fostering livelihood opportunities through basic electronics repair.
The E-WISE Community Program stands as a testament to the University’s mission to bridge technical training and outreach services. By combining environmental awareness, practical repair skills, and creative expression, the program empowered participants with knowledge and confidence while instilling a renewed sense of responsibility toward sustainable living. It exemplifies the University’s commitment to fostering environmental stewardship, leadership, and community empowerment.
