Faculty members and student extensionists from Rizal Technological University (RTU) successfully conducted “Juanimate,” a community extension seminar-workshop designed to equip youth leaders with practical skills in creating effective digital publication materials, on July 12. Implemented in partnership with the Barangay 904 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), the project empowered participants with essential knowledge in visual communication, digital design, and responsible content creation using accessible online tools.
Recognizing the increasing importance of digital communication in community engagement, Juanimate focused on strengthening participants’ competencies in designing publication materials for both print and social media platforms. Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning, participants explored the three essential elements of effective publication design—typography, color, and layout.
The learning sessions featured engaging activities such as “Juan Thing About Me!”, which encouraged creativity and self-expression through personalized name tag designs; “The Font Is,” an interactive exercise introducing typography concepts; “Hue Got It,” which demonstrated the role of color psychology and branding; and a layout challenge where participants arranged publication elements using grid systems. These activities transformed technical design concepts into enjoyable and meaningful learning experiences.
One of the program’s highlights was the “Juan D-Sign” workshop, where participants worked in teams to create Facebook publication materials based on assigned community themes. Guided by RTU extensionists, the participants applied their newly acquired knowledge while exploring Canva as a digital design platform. The activity fostered collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking as participants carefully selected fonts, color palettes, layouts, and visual elements to communicate their assigned messages effectively.
For many participants, the workshop marked their first experience using Canva to produce digital publication materials. Beyond learning technical skills, the activity boosted their confidence in creating visually appealing and informative content that can support future barangay initiatives, youth campaigns, and community information drives.
The project’s impact extended beyond the seminar itself. By enhancing the digital communication capabilities of Barangay 904 SK members and youth participants, Juanimate contributes to strengthening community engagement through more effective public information materials, online announcements, advocacy campaigns, and educational content. Equipped with practical design skills, participants are now better prepared to develop publication materials that are informative, visually engaging, and responsive to the needs of their communities.
To measure learning outcomes, participants completed a post-test after the seminar-workshop, demonstrating the knowledge and competencies they had gained throughout the program. The activity concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and tokens to the Barangay 904 Sangguniang Kabataan officials, while RTU Extension and Community Service representative Ms. Sheena Foster, project leader Dr. Nilmar I. Moreno, and all partners, whose support contributed to the successful implementation of the outreach initiative, were also given recognition.
In their closing messages, the RTU extensionists expressed their gratitude to the participants and community partners for their active participation and collaboration. They emphasized that Juanimate reflects RTU’s continuing commitment to community engagement by providing relevant, skills-based learning opportunities that empower individuals and promote sustainable local development.
Through Juanimate, RTU continues to bridge academic expertise and community needs, demonstrating how extension programs can cultivate digital literacy, creativity, and civic participation among local youth. By empowering young leaders with practical communication and design skills, the university reinforces its mission of producing socially responsive initiatives that create lasting and meaningful impact in the communities it serves.
