Rizal Technological University (RTU), National University (NU), and Bicol University (BU) jointly hosted the 1st ASEAN ERA (Extension, Research, Academia) International Conference 2026 from January 28 to 30, 2026, at Bicol University, Legazpi City, Albay. The landmark conference brought together academics, researchers, and extension practitioners from across the region to advance collaborative discourse on sustainable development, innovation, and community engagement in higher education.

The ASEAN ERA Conference served as a platform for sharing best practices, research outputs, and extension initiatives that contribute to regional development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussions emphasized the critical role of higher education institutions in translating research and academic expertise into measurable social impact, reinforcing the integration of extension, research, and instruction as drivers of sustainable and inclusive growth.

A key highlight of the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among the three host institutions, formalizing their commitment to long-term collaboration in research, extension, academic mobility, and capacity building. The MOU underscores a shared vision of fostering impact-driven partnerships, aligned with global benchmarks such as the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The MOU was signed by key officials from the institutions. Representing RTU at the MOU signing were Dr. Salvacion J. Pachejo, Vice President for Planning, Quality Assurance, and Strategic Initiatives (VPPQASI) and Assoc. Prof. Donato Z. Estocada, Director, International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO). NU-Dasmariñas Campus was represented by Dr. Catherine D. Lagadia, Executive Director; Dir. Ramon L. Rodriguez, Academic Director; and Mr. Manuel J. Logatoc, Community Extension and NSTP Director. Meanwhile Ms. Evangeline Honrado, Director of the International Relations Office, served as the representative of Bicol University.

The RTU delegation was further supported by key research and innovation personnel, including Mr. Joven Baltazar, Research, Development, and Innovation Office (RDIO) Staff; Mr. Diomel Gill, Esana, Technology Transfer Staff; and Mr. Joel Mark Rodriguez, RDIO Unit Head.

During the conference and MOU discussions, the partner institutions identified opportunities for joint research initiatives, technology transfer, extension programs, and faculty and student engagement that directly address regional and national development priorities. These initiatives are expected to generate tangible outcomes that strengthen institutional impact, research productivity, and community relevance.

In line with the collaborative roadmap established through the MOU, Rizal Technological University is set to host the 3rd ASEAN ERA International Conference in 2028, reaffirming its leadership role in advancing regional academic cooperation and sustainability-oriented higher education.

The successful hosting of the 1st ASEAN ERA International Conference and the signing of the tripartite MOU highlight the collective commitment of RTU, NU, and BU to advancing impact-driven, sustainable, and partnership-centered higher education in the ASEAN region.
