RizalTech and Mapua University Sign a Memorandum of Agreement

Posted on July 31, 2018

On July 27, 2018, I have signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the MAPUA UNIVERSITY for collaboration in research and education in Space Science and Physics. On the part of Mapua University, the MOA is signed by Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The idea of having a MOA between the two Universities was conceived by Prof. Ryan Guido, the Chair of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences of the RTU and by Dr. Ernest Macalalad, a professor of Physics in Mapua University, who visited us sometime this year to deliver a lecture to our students and faculty. Dr. Macalalad is our colleague in the Division XII (Earth and Space Sciences) of the NRCP.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Vea, who is an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology, suggested that perhaps we can contribute to the proposed creation of a national space agency that would work towards sending Filipinos and satellites into space. More importantly, the collaboration will enhance our work in Astronomy and Science education where we aim to propagate scientific interest among our young people. Knowledge comes through the telescope, and if you show Saturn to a kid, or even to an adult, scientific interest is immediately triggered. The two Universities can further explore areas where they can collaborate in fields in Engineering and Technology.

We have invited the Mapuans, Dr. Macalalad and his students, to attend the lectures in Astrophysics to be delivered by the scientists and astronomers from the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) on August 15 to 16 in the RizalTech.

Before the formal signing we were guided on a tour of the laboratory facilities of Mapua University. I took pictures of their equipment and shown them to some of our engineers upon our return to our campus. Mapua has excellent state-of-the-art equipment in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and there are many which we should also acquire. The number of our equipment has been increasing. Perhaps the new building being proposed by Congresswoman Queenie Gonzales to be built at the back of the Profeta Building should be a laboratory building, with enough spacious rooms to house all our incoming equipment. Mapua’s laboratories are quite small because their buildings have been built before the new equipment were available. Even our own buildings in the RizalTech have not been designed to accommodate big modern equipment.

The Mapua-RizalTech collaboration is, I believe, an important step for Philippine Education.

NORIE LA ROSA AND VIOLY RASTRULLO, ATHLETES

Posted on July 30, 2018

Great Athletes. They studied in the RizalTech.

I have nominated some of our faculty members and a coach to the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame. Two of them are Norie Larosa and Violy Rastrullo, PE teachers.

Violy and Norie were members of the Philippine team in Volleyball which played in the 8th FIVB World Volleyball Championship held in Mexico in 1974 where they placed 18th out of 23 nations which qualified and participated, even ahead of West Germany France. Japan emerged as the Champion of the tournament, followed by the Soviet Union in second, and South Korea in third place. This was the first and the last time the Philippines qualified in the FIVB World Volleyball Championship.

They were also members of the Philippine Volleyball team which won the Gold Medal in three consecutive South East Asian Games, 1977, 1979, and 1981, and the Silver Medal in 1983. Together, they placed 5th in the Asian Games held in India in 1982.

In the pictures they are shown with their team mates receiving the Gold Medal for the SEA Games.

What they have achieved have not been achieved by our present crop of celebrity Volleyball players such as Alyssa Valdez, Aby Marano, Dindin and Jaja Santiago, Rachel Ann Daquis, Bangs Pineda, Mika Reyes, to name just a few.

NEARING COMPLETION: The Health and Wellness Building

Posted on July 9, 2018

This afternoon (July 9, 2018) we visited the Health and Wellness Building currently under construction. The Building should be about 85% completed by now.

There are various facilities to be found inside such as the dance studio, swimming pool, badminton and table tennis hall, the weights and workout room, the basketball court/volleyball court on the 7th floor.

The basketball/volleyball court will be installed with maple flooring, while the dance studio is currently being fitted with engineered wood.

The swimming pool is 9 meters by 5 meters, just enough size for the building and should be good enough for some endurance training. It will be four feet deep.

There is a number of airconditioned lecture rooms. The lobby will be adjacent to the Registrar’s Office and will serve as lounge.

The Building is planned to be inaugurated by November this year.

Posted on July 3, 2018

What the Distinguished Service Plaque says almost sums up my career in the RizalTech.

Almost 25 years ago I received this Distinguished Service Plaque during the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Rizal Technological Colleges, formerly the College of Rizal. After the Celebration I brought the Plaque home and forgot all about it until I found it tucked in one corner of an old, really old, turntable in our old house. The citation reads like this:

The Rizal Technological Colleges

(formerly the College of Rizal)

1969 – 1994

Awards this

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE PLAQUE

To

DR. JESUS RF. TORRES

In grateful appreciation of his worthy services to the RTC as a student leader in 1978 who helped in providing healthy student organizational climate; of his leadership and aggressiveness in leading the studentry to rally and move for the conversion of RTC to a state college; of his loyalty and devotion to the cause of RTC; of his sustained faith in the Administration’s implementation of RTC goals and missions as Head of Student Services from 1983 to 1985; of his readiness and willingness to serve the interests of RTC over and beyond the call of duty; of his notable capability and efficiency as a college professor from 1984 to the present; of his infinite patience, zeal and personal integrity in the performance of his difficult but challenging role as Vice President of RTC; and for bringing a young and fresh outlook into the organization and Administration of RTC.”
