Civil Engineering Equipment, WAW-1000E Computer Control Electro-Hydraulic Servo Universal 100 Ton Tensile Testing Machine

Posted on November 23, 2015

I have just signed the Purchase Order for several additional Civil Engineering equipment.  In particular we are buying the WAW-1000E Computer Control Electro-Hydraulic Servo Universal 100 Ton Tensile Testing Machine.

According to Engr. Lorenzo Caranguian, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, this equipment is to be used for the following purposes:

“Material testing is one of the major components of Civil Engineering.  This equipment can be used to perform to get the properties of materials such as axial stress of concrete and steel.  It is also used to determine the flexural stress of a sample of beam and the tensile stress of construction steel.  Experiments to determine the ductility and stress-strain of steel can also be performed.”

The Lines at the Cashier, Serbisyong may malasakit

Posted on November 13, 2015

I supervised the conduct of the long lines at the Cashier.  This is one job a University President cannot say it is not his job.

On October 28, 2015 we were surprised to see very long lines of students leading to the Cashier’s Office.  We have not seen this kind of lines foe a very long time.  In fact it has never happened in my administration, not until this day.

It was a common occurrence in the past when students had to start forming in lines leading to the Cashier’s as early as 2 am, but no one seemed to care.  The long lines would go on for the whole day and if you happened to be at the end of the line you would be extremely lucky if at 4 pm the windows at the Cashier’s would still be open.  The persons in charge of enrolment simply didn’t care.  I vowed this would never happen in my administration.

When we began the on-line enrolment system the lines have become much shorter.  At one time we measured the amount of time a student would spend if he starts to join the line at the Office of Extension Services.  All it took was 30 minutes when there were 10 windows open at the Cashier’s.

On that day (October 28) I had a bunch of hardworking employees and security guards to man the lines.  The blue 5-seaters fabricated by Ric Dulay made from discarded damaged chairs—I did not realize there was already quite a number of them—were arranged so that those who were in line could sit while waiting.  All the available loose chairs—monoblocks, visitors’ chairs—were brought at the instructions of Engr. Dong Matias and Engr. Corleto Bravo to the Neptali Gonzales Hall lobby where we brought the lines.

Lucio Vergara and Eduardo “Deward” Villanueva arrived to assist in putting the lines in order.  Engr. Corleto Bravo and Engr. Dong Matias took all the chairs they could find to the lobby so the students could sit while waiting for the lines to move.

Dr. Elmer Martin summoned all the available cashiers and soon there were 10 windows open.  Dr. Jeremias Buraga was in the vicinity of the Cashier’s Office all day supervising the movement of the lines. Soon student volunteers from the Student Council stationed themselves at various posts to pull the lines as they moved fast towards the Cashier’s Office.  At about 3 pm the lines were almost gone.

I bought burgers from Jollibee to reward everybody who made the day successful, even the security guards who assisted.

On the following few day the lines were still as long as the day before but the arrangement of the chairs were more orderly.  It was really a superb effort by all who assisted, and I thank them all.

That’s how we do it in the RizalTech.  Serbisyong may malasakit.

The New Buildings in the Pasig Campus

Posted on November 12, 2015

The construction of the new buildings in the Pasig Campus is well under way.  There are actually two buildings currently being built at the same time.

One building is the extension of the Eusebio Engineering, Science and Technology Building which is twice the length of the original building and is really the equivalent of two more buildings.

The other building is the academic building funded through the initiative of Congressman Roman Romulo.

We will need the Eusebio Buildings for the K to 12 program, while we plan to use the Romulo Building to house our fast-increasing science and engineering equipment for the Pasig Campus.

We thank our local government leaders headed by Mayor Maribel Eusebio and Congressman Romulo for their continuing trust and confidence in the RizalTech Pasig Campus.  With these buildings we will be able to provide better service to the community.

RizalTech in the Unigames 2015, Part II, TRIUMPH

Posted on November 6, 2015

In the morning of October 26, 2015 I received the news from Norie Larosa that we have won two quick gold medals in Athletics, and another one for this day in the games being held in the Panaad Stadium, a pleasant venue where the track oval is bounded by tall trees.  Together with President Emeritus Dr. Jose Macaballug, Dr. Cesar Mateo and Coach Arlene Rodriguez, we went to this place in the afternoon and witnessed two events where we won two silver medals in succession against powerhouse teams from FEU and UST.  In this staging of the Unigames, there were three major contenders for the best athletic teams, the RizalTech, FEU and UST.  In the Men’s Division our team took the 2nd runner-up behind FEU and UST, while we took the 1st runner-up honors behind UST, with FEU placing 3rd.

The Athletics team won 6 gold medals in 400m (Jinky Obanon), 800m (Janel Silvoza), 400 meter hurdles (Josefina Baloloy), 5-k walk (Junrel Bendoy), 4×400 relay W (Angoring, Obanon, Silvoza, Baloloy), and in the 4×400 relay M (Borres, John Rey, Plana, Allan Paul, Librando, Jonathan, Sioco, Jeffrey).

Meanwhile, the basketball women’s team has been demolishing all their opponents including Enderun College and St. Benilde.  They went on to win the Unigames championship with an unblemished 8-0 record.  This is history.  This is the first time in the Unigames when we have won a championship in a major event.  The closest we ever got previous to this was when the women’s basketball team took 2nd place against Adamson U in 2006 and against the mighty UAAP champions NU in 2014.  The highest rank the men’s basketball team got was 4th place in 2011 when Jericho Cruz, Robbie Celiz, Lee Villamor and Philip Paniamogan were still members of our team.

The Sepak Takraw team, as expected, again won the championship, for the 8th time in a row, a record that would be very hard to beat.

The Taekwondo team won one gold in the Women’s division (Ella Rose Majid), and another gold in the Men’s division (Eril Pujeda).

This is still not the best performance in the Unigames.  Last year we won 13 gold medals in Athletics alone, on our way to garnering the over-all championship in the Women’s division.  Still we rejoice for our victories and learn from our defeats.  Congratulations to all our athletes!

RizalTech in the Unigames 2015, Part I

Posted on November 2, 2015

I went to Bacolod City on October 24, 2015 in my role as the number one cheerleader of our athletes participating in the 2015 edition of the University Games which is more popularly known as the Unigames.  Upon arrival in Bacolod City I right away phoned my good friend and former classmate at the Asian Institute of Management Dr. Renato Sorolla, President of the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC which the pronounce Camsi) in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.  Unfortunately he was in Iloilo City but I told him anyway that I would like to borrow one vehicle for my use while in Bacolod City.

Dr. Sorolla generously lent me an Isuzu Crosswind Sportivo, apparently his own service vehicle, complete with a driver.  The driver, I discovered pretty soon, is the third ranking Pangulong Diakono or Head Deacon of the Iglesia Ni Cristo Locale of Talisay City, Ka Leo Lobresco, a good man.  He wore polo barong while on duty and I thought our very own drivers in the RizalTech should also be dressed as decently.

Since I arrived in Bacolod at noon with Joseph Clemente (Chief Accountant), Dean Reyda Flordeliza (Institute of Physical Education), and Dr. Meriani Alejandro, we proceeded to CHMSC for lunch with the athletes.

The CHMSC in Talisay has a huge 5-hectare campus with only about 5,000 students.  It has a big grass playground where football goals are set up.  I thought to myself if only the RizalTech has a campus as big as this in Mandaluyong City…

And then in the afternoon, after some nap, I did a road run, something I haven’t done in my life yet.  Having estimated the distance from the Robinson’s Bacolod to CHMSC to be about 5.5 kilometers from the gauges of a taxi, I decided to jog all the way to CHMSC.  I normally run 6 kilometers or more in the track oval, but doing a road run is much more stressful than I thought.  It took me one hour and ten minutes to arrive at the quarters of our athletes.

The CHMSC campus is a very clean, pleasant and well-maintained, though you might miss the big number of students we are used to seeing in the Rizal Tech.

RTC Our Alma Mater Dear…

Posted on November 2, 2015

Almost no one still remembers this song.   This is the Hymn of the Rizal Technological Colleges.  I am writing it from memory:

RTC Our Alma Mater dear

We pledge our hearts and minds to you

Forever your thought shall be our light

You make our dreams come true

You brighten our paths when days see, blue

We are your sons loyal and true

To your ideals your visions and goals

Our beloved Alma Mater

Beloved RTC

Though times and the seasons of life shall come to pass

We will keep faith with you

No matter where we go, no matter what we do

We will never forget our beloved RTC

Where we first learned what is true

We will always remember our beloved RTC

We will always remember our beloved RTC!

When we first heard the song we thought it sounded like a church hymn.  Well, it is just to be expected.  Dr. Profeta was a deeply religious woman, and the musical score was rendered by a lay church leader who was also a choir conductor in the Pasig Catholic Church.  I was asking people if they could give me the name of this fine person (I have known him personally) but no one could still remember.

Anyway, all the three previous presidents of this University have been deeply religious.  It is for a good reason.  The job of the University President is so stressful and full of challenges that often the president could not do anything but pray.  I always do nowadays.
