Biotechnology has been developing at a very rapid rate in more advanced countries and is endowing them with more productive capabilities in a globally competitive environment. For the Philippines to remain competitive, it must have the capability to harness biotechnology for national development. This capability needs strengthening through a strong manpower development program. The BS Biotechnology is expected to produce the manpower needed for the country.

Biotechnology is a fascinating field, which is the cutting edge of science. It is essentially the use of living cells of organisms to create new products for health (pharmaceuticals), agricultural, environmental, diagnostic and other products to benefit the society. People working in this field make ground breaking discoveries that fight diseases, improve food production, clean up the environment and make manufacturing more efficient and profitable. It is considered to be the growth technology of the 21 st Century. Its applications are widespread including the following:

   •Diagnosis and treatment of both human and plant diseases
   •Improved production of therapeutic agents
   •Development of improved crop plant species
   •Development of biosensors for environmental pollutants
   •Development of improved waste treatment processes and methods for remediating contaminated      environmental pollutants
   •Production of transgenic organisms for the production of new drugs, improved animal and plant productivity.

Career Opportunities

        Biotechnology is tipped to be the growth technology of the 21 st Century. Graduates will work in biotechnology, medical and agricultural industries, in food production and manufacturing and in a range of public and private diagnostic, therapeutic research laboratories, covering microbiology, immunology, forensic science, molecular biology, protein engineering, crop development, animal production, biomedical and veterinary services, pest and control bioremediation.

Program Objective

The BS Biotechnology intends to produce individuals with advanced science as well as market orientation for biotechnology. These individuals shall be equipped with the necessary laboratory skills needed by the industry, the confidence and creativity to apply new knowledge to improve their work and the option to become entrepreneurs themselves.
